My only kickboxing skills come from an old-school VHS from the 90s that my mom and I picked up at a consignment shop for one buck last May. And I won’t lie – I had a blast fighting imaginary people in my family room throughout the summer.

I didn’t pop this VHS in regularly, but I did give a handful of tries. Thinking back on the feeling it gave me (like I was training with Jackie Chan in the The Karate Kid), I was excited to give Sunday’s Turbokick class a shot.

Before attending, I checked out Campus Rec’s description of the class so I had a better idea of what I was getting into:

“Turbokick: It’s a combination of intense kickboxing moves, as well as dance moves all perfectly choreographed to high energy and motivating music. It’s the ultimate cardiovascular challenge that’s a unique blend of intense intervals strength/endurance training, and a relaxing cool-down.”

Only two words scared me. I’ll give you a hint – they’re the same two words that freaked me out before attending Zumba. Figure it out yet? DANCE MOVES.

Just a few minutes after arriving to the class, that high-energy music started pumping and my nerves began fading away. The majority of the class I was on my toes, which totally worked my calves! And, I threw punches and kicked A LOT during those 60 minutes.

This class was very comparable to Zumba, so if you are a fan of that class, I definitely recommend giving Turbokick a try! Every song was choreographed and had different moves, but the instructor’s brief explanation prior to starting each routine made it simple. The music and the moves kept my heart rate up and made my Sunday afternoon workout (typically my most lethargic one of the week) both intense and enjoyable!

As for those dance moves, I felt like I handled them pretty well (which if you’ve read my blog on Zumba, you know that I’m like the Rebecca Black of dancing), so no matter your skill level, you can definitely manage this class. The atmosphere felt completely judgment-free and everyone had a good time.

So if you’ve never done a class before, give this class a try! If you’re a Zumba-goer, give this class a try! If you’re in a workout rut and need to spice it up, give this class a try! (Get where I’m going with this?) Truly though, this class gave me such a great workout and I enjoyed every second of it!
