Racing into Shape

The weather is finally gorgeous and taking a step outside actually feels refreshing.  Spring is here and there’s no better way to take advantage of this campus than going on a run.  Instead of sleeping until noon on a Saturday, how about waking up early, getting exercise, enjoying the outdoors, contributing to a charity and racing?!

Sure, that sounds like a lot to do before you usually open your eyelids on the weekend, but there is at least one race every weekend in Chapel Hill from this weekend until exams!  Below, I’ve listed a few races – with time, date, place, distance, etc.  So pick one (or a few), sign up and grab a few friends to join you.

Color the Hill – Wear white t-shirts to this 5K and you’ll finish painted like a rainbow.  Proceeds benefit three local nonprofits and there will be ice cream, sandwiches and shaved ice food trucks!  The race takes place April 13 at 10 a.m.

5K Lifestyle Race and 1 Mile Fun Run – If you’re not in the mood to be splattered with colors or want to just go a mile, you can participate in this race that’ll take you through the greenway, Southern Community Park and Southern Village.  Awards are given at the end of the 5K and proceeds benefit the East Chapel Hill Rotary Club’s Teacher Supply Store.  The race takes place April 13 from 10 a.m. to noon.

Tar Heel 10 Miler – Looking for something more challenging than a 5K?  Sign up for this race and you’ll go 10 miles throughout Chapel Hill.  UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center is a charity partner for the race.  The race takes place April 20 at 7:30 a.m.

5K for Fitness – This 3.1 run or walk starts at McCorkle Place and takes you through Campus.  The Public School Foundation and Fleet Feet Sports are presenters of the race.  It takes place April 27 at 9 a.m.

2013 Spring Fling – This race is presented by UNC Campus Rec and is only open to UNC faculty and staff.  Two options are available – a 2.7 mile fun run or a 1.5 mile walk.  You can get out of the office, give back to the community, by donating cans to the Glenwood Elementary Family Assistance Program or pet donations to the Orange County Animal Shelter, and take advantage of the warm spring weather.  The race takes place on Friday, May 3 at 12:15 p.m.

Campus Run – Okay, I tricked you; this isn’t a race.  But you can join Campus Rec, Fleet Feet, and NIKE every Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Rams Head Rec Center for an evening of running.  Runs are three and five miles in distance, at varying paces.  NIKE will be giving away swag after the run so stick around!  This is a FREE event and registration is not necessary!

Two Special Events: GlowGa and Eating for Exercise

Two very exciting events are coming up this week and next!  On Wednesday, Feb. 20, it will be a Neon Night featuring GlowGa at the SRC.  This will take place from 5:30-9:30 p.m.  Everyone – yes, you, you and you – should be rocking some sort of neon.  Steal one of your mom’s 80s outfits, your boyfriend’s neon frat tank – whatever you have to do!

If you’re wearing neon during Neon Night, you’ll be entered into a raffle.  Prizes will be given away every 15 minutes.  Then at 8 p.m., Campus Rec will get started with GlowGa.  Never heard of it?  It’s quite simple – glow sticks + yoga = GlowGa.  Get it?  Guys and gals are free to join; yoga gurus and those that have never been to a class before are welcome.  No matter what your experience with yoga is, this is sure to be a fun class.

So leave the usual white v-neck shirt behind and come to the SRC wearing your loudest colored outfit.  Win prizes, wear glow sticks and do some yoga!

A week from today, Monday, Feb. 25, from 5:30 p.m. until 7 p.m., the SRC will be hosting Eating for Exercise: The Recipe for Fitness.  Campus Rec has teamed up with Carolina Dining Services for this educational event.  If you’ve been wondering about what to eat before and after your workout (and if you love free food), this event is for you.

A nutritionist will provide those who come out with advice on what to eat pre- and post- sweat sessions.  Then, a 30 minute High Intensity Interval Training (H.I.I.T) class will be held followed by a Q&A session.  Food samples will be provided as well as healthy recipes and pre-made workout routines to take on-the-go so you can make yourself a meal plan or fitness routine if desired!  In addition to the nutritionist, a personal trainer will also attend and can answer any questions you may have.

So come out to either (or both!) programs!  Neon Night and GlowGa will be full of fun – oh, and prizes.  And Eating for Exercise: The Recipe for Fitness will provide you with all the information you need to have a personal trainer-approved fitness routine and nutritionist-approved recipes.  We want you to enjoy living a healthy lifestyle but also want to help you see results doing it!  See you then!

The Rec Experience

Want to experience everything that Campus Rec has to offer and earn free gear!  Campus Rec is hosting its first “Rec Experience.”  Complete five activities in five weeks and receive a workout kit that includes a t-shirt, water bottle, workout towel and gym bag.

The program runs from February 1 through March 8.  So today, you can pick up an Activity Card in the Main Office located in the SRC.  Every time you complete an activity, get your card stamped by the Campus Rec employee leading the activity.  Get five stamps and you win!

There are seven activities to choose from and they are…

  1. Visit Tuesday Table in the SRC from 4:00-7:00 p.m. any Tuesday (duh) and inquire about Campus Rec’s social media outlets.  Added bonus – there are almost always freebies at the table, like water bottles, whey protein powder and shakes!
  2. Attend any Cycle class in the Fetzer Hall Cycle Studio.  Click here for the Cycle class schedule.   And if you’re not sure what to expect, you can read my review here!
  3. Attend any Pilates class in the SRC.  You can read about the benefits of Pilates here and my review of the class here!
  4. Attend any Muscle Cut Barbells class in the SRC.  Click here for the group fitness class schedule.  I know, shame on me, but I honestly haven’t tried this class out yet.  But I’ve interviewed one of the fabulous instructors, Colleen Daly. Yes, Ms. UNC herself! Check out that interview here!
  5. Visit the Functional Movement and Fitness Center (FMFC) for a FREE Fitness Service. Click here for FMFC hours and services.  I did this and it was so helpful to figure out how to improve my fitness abilities!  I blogged about my experience (and what I did well at and realized what I needed to work on).
  6. Attend GlowGa on Feb. 20th. Picture it…yoga with glow sticks! A night of fun and, of course, prizes! Click here for more information.  And of course, a blog post on it coming to a computer near you soon!
  7. Attend a very special event, Eating for Exercise: The Recipe for Fitness, and learn what you should eat before and after a workout. Click here for more information.

The Rec Experience is a great way to learn more about all that Campus Rec has to offer!  For additional information, please visit campusrec.unc.edu/rec-experience.  If you have further questions, you can contact Karen Cunningham at karen.cunningham@unc.edu.

Spring Into Fitness 2013!

Want to start the semester off right? Stop by the SRC for Spring Into Fitness TODAY from 12 p.m. until 7 p.m. It’s like a whole semester of the offerings from Campus Rec and Carolina Fitness programs and services combined into one day.

For those seven hours, you can get a free fitness assessment in SRC 110. Read all about my assessment here (where I found out I should be proud of my bicep strength and learned that I had to improve on the strength of my core). At the fitness service expo, you can find out your body composition, blood pressure, target heart rate zone and more. Get all the tests done or just one!

flexibility

Additionally, from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m., in the SRC Studio A (upstairs), three information tables will be held.  At “Ask a Trainer”, you can, well, ask a trainer. It’s “Fact vs. Fiction,” so you can find out if you can work out your abs every day, if chocolate milk really is the best post-workout meal and other rumored fitness facts. “Ask a Nutritionist” will be held during this time as well, so you can find out nutritionists’ favorite snacks, how many grams of protein you should consume in a day and if FroYo is actually healthy. Last, Carolina Dining Services will also have a table and provide you with information to make the best choices at Lenoir and Rams Head Dining Hall!

Chances are, you haven’t attended every fitness class at Campus Rec. Today is your chance to try a new class or even a few. You can find the schedule here. Basically, the most popular classes, such as Zumba, Yoga, Bootcamp and Muscle Cut will be held for 30 minutes. So if you go and find out you love it, you can go for the full time next week! This is a perfect time to bring along a couple friends and try something you haven’t tried before. Bonus – most the class will have never been there before. So, maybe you’re not a choreography expert (like me), but you’ll fit right in! My motto: the more newbies, the merrier.

For more information on Spring Into Fitness, read up here. And if you have further questions, feel free to contact Lauren Mangili at lmangili@email.unc.edu.

Cornhole Tournament

Want to win a free cornhole set?  Come out to Campus Rec’s Cornhole Tournament on Monday, Oct. 15.  If you’re an expert, we expect you to bring your a-game.  If you’re a newbie, the rules are quite simple…

  1. Each team (of two) has four cornhole bags that are thrown at the platform opposite of where they are standing (usually about 25 feet away).
  2. The teams alternate throwing until all eight cornhole bags are thrown.
  3. Teams then count the points scored during the game, and the team to reach 21 points first wins!
  4. For points: Throw a bag in the hole, your team receives three points.  Throw a bag anywhere on the platform, you get one point.  Bags on the ground receive no points.

Still confused?  Check out this short clip of Rameses and Gus (Campus Rec’s mascot in case you still don’t know!) competing in an epic game of cornhole.

So come out to the South Campus Recreation Complex (SCRC) with a partner and compete in this bracket-style tourney.  There will be free food, sand volleyball and prizes!  The event is from 5:30 until 9:30 p.m., but check-in opens at 5:00 p.m.

To register, complete this form and then bring it with your $10 payment (total for your team) to the Main Office in the SRC.  Hurry before spots run out!  Registration ends Tuesday, Oct. 9.

Global Gladiator Games

It’s the Carolina version of the Hunger Games. Be sure to join Campus Rec, MASALA (UNC’s multicultural organization), the Interfraternity Council and Alpha Phi Alpha in competing in the 2012 Global Gladiator Games!

Grab some friends and compete in the five action-packed GGG events, which will take place at Hooker Fields 1 and 2. The five challenges:

  1. Jousting  (without the horses, full metal costumes and the spears of course)
  2. Sniper
  3. Wheel Barrow Relay (be sure to work out those arm muscles beforehand!)
  4. Obstacle Course Relay
  5. Tug-of-War (bringing it back to elementary school)

Think you’d be a pro at these events? Get a team together and register so that you can be the ultimate gladiators. Or, if you’re feeling competitive but don’t have a team, you can register as an individual and Campus Rec will place you on a team. Carolina students, faculty or staff members can compete in one of three divisions: men’s, women’s and co-rec.

The competition will take place Wednesday, April 11 at 5:30 p.m. Check-in takes place the day of the event from 5:00-5:25 and you can register from March 19th through April 10th. Register as a team at the Campus Rec Main Office in the SRC or register as an individual online.

Cornhole Tournament

This game has become almost as popular as Words with Friends with college kids, although it takes a little more activity. Whether you call it cornhole, baggo or bean bag toss, it’s something you can play just about anywhere. It’s a great, relaxing game to play outdoors, now that spring has arrived.. If you’ve never played the game, the rules are quite simple:

  1. Each team has four cornhole bags that are thrown at a platform opposite of where they are standing (usually about 25 feet away).
  2. The teams alternate throwing until all eight cornhole bags are thrown.
  3. Teams then count the points scored during the game, and the team to reach 21 points first wins!

Scoring points is the tricky part. If you throw a bag in the hole, your team receives three points. If the bag is anywhere on the platform, you receive one point. Bags on the ground receive no points.

On Wednesday, March 28, Campus Rec will be hosting a Cornhole Tournament. You and a partner can compete in this bracket-style tourney. The tournament will be a single or double elimination format bracket, depending on the number of participants, with matchups randomly selected.

The event starts at 5 p.m. at the South Campus Recreation Complex (SCRC) and will be an afternoon of cornhole, grilling out, sand volleyball and many prizes and giveaways!

If you are one of the first 15 teams to register, you will receive two t-shirts, courtesy of GNC. Click here to print out the registration sheet. You can register in the Campus Rec Main Office, located in the SRC for just $5 per team (cash or ONE Card only).

For more information on the tournament, visit campusrec.unc.edu/cornhole.

31st Annual Turkey Trot

It’s that time of year again. With Thanksgiving right around the corner, Campus Rec will hold the 31st annual Turkey Trot this Saturday, Nov. 12 at 10 a.m. Because it’s the season of giving, Campus Rec is asking participants to bring at least one canned good rather than paying an entrance fee. After the event, the collected items will be donated to the Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina. If you need some ideas about what to bring, take a look at this list of their most needed items.

In past years, the Turkey Trot has been a traditional 5k, but this year Campus Rec has added a twist. The race will follow a 5k course (3.1 miles) where the “Pilgrims” (race participants) will be chasing the “Turkeys” (Campus Rec staff).  Turkeys will be given a 3 minute headstart. Each Turkey you pass on the trail will earn you a raffle entry.

Want to take it a little easier? You can partake in a 1-mile walk or run option.

After the race, apple cider and snacks will be offered in addition to games and crafts for children.

You can register online at Campus Rec’s website or register in person in the Campus Rec Main Office located in the SRC. Check-in opens at 9 a.m. and walk-up registrations are accepted the day of the event from 9:00-9:45 a.m.

I hope you’ll take advantage of this fun, family-friendly event. Join Campus Rec this Saturday to support a good cause, to get in some exercise and to possibly win some great prizes!

Zumbathon

Pumping music, burritos and subs, killer performances, a cute t-shirt and of course, a great workout. What more could I ask for? This is everything I got at the Campus Rec Zumbathon.

About 100 students (including a few boys!), all the Zumba instructors and Gus the Gorilla (the new special events mascot) gathered together to dance for three hours in order to sweat off a few calories and raise money for A Drink for Tomorrow. This non-profit organization raises awareness of the lack of access to clean water in impoverished communities around the globe as well as funds to provide clean, safe water to those who lack this basic human right.

Each instructor lead the group for 20 minute sessions. Then, there were 10 minute breaks for water, food and awesome performances to watch while our heart rates went down a little (until the next set of steps!). One group to perform was born2step, a stepping squad that made my semi-descent Zumba skills look like I was attending my first class. They were great and definitely made me want to step up my game during the next 20 minutes of Zumba! Another performance was by the one and only Achordants. They kept the crowd entertained and even showed off a few dance skills themselves!

Overall, the event was a success! Everyone got in their cardio and raised some money for a great cause. If you didn’t attend this first Zumbathon, definitely grab a ticket for the next one! And until then, keep practicing your steps by attending a weekly Zumba class, so born2step (or worse – The Achordants) don’t show you up!

Stay tuned for some awesome pictures!
