Summer Intramural Sports Schedule

Will you be in Chapel Hill all summer?  While most your friends will be heading home, abroad or to the beach for vacation all summer (lucky), you won’t have to resort to being bored.  Campus Rec will be here all summer too, of course.

People think Campus Rec in the summer is limited to the pool and the gym.  Not true – you can also participate in many Intramural Sports!  Whether you’re here for the first summer session, the second, or both, students will be playing sports!

throwing ball

Summer Session is a great opportunity at UNC to meet new people.  With a small group compared to the usual giant group of undergrads, you really have to branch out and get to know new people.  Intramural Sports is the ultimate chance to do that – do something fun, active, challenging and rewarding.

Session I entries open on May 14 and close on May 17.  The sports played will be softball, 3-on-3 basketball, 4-on-4 flag football and tennis.

Block

Session II entries open on June 20 and close on June 26.  The sports played will again be 3-on-3 basketball, 4-on-4 flag football and tennis as well as Sand Volleyball 3’s.

Once registration opens, you can sign up here.  For more information on Intramural Sports, specifically for the summer, click here.

Upcoming Intramural Sports – Sign Up Now!

Exercise doesn’t just have to be in a gym.  Sure, lifting weights, attending a cycling class and logging a few miles on the treadmill are all great.  Not to get cheesy or anything, but the best workouts are those that you don’t even realize you are doing!

Remember middle school P.E., throwing dodgeballs at all your best friends?  Well, you were getting your exercise probably didn’t think twice about it.  Working out can be fun when you are playing a game.  Form a team and get involved with an intramural sport.

Now through next Tuesday, Feb. 26, you can sign up for Tennis and 4v4 Flag Football.  For Tennis, the divisions are: Men’s Singles and Doubles, Women’s Singles and Doubles, and Mixed Doubles.  For more information on the rules of tennis and how to register, click here4v4 Flag Football plays games on Tuesdays and Thursdays and is open to Co-Rec teams, Men’s teams and Women’s teams.  The Co-Rec teams require two males and two females.  The rules are pretty much like you remember from your elementary school days, but for more information, click here.

Hockey

Starting Monday, Feb. 25 through March 5, you can sign up for Primetime Basketball and Street Hockey.  Primetime Basketball has both a men’s and women’s league and requires five people to start and finish the game.  Click here for the rules and here for further information.  Street Hockey is no stranger to Tar Heel Tone Up.  Last year, we featured Eli McCrain, a player and referee for IM Street Hockey.  And once again, the rules are just like they were when you played in your street with your neighborhood friends.

Whether you want to play competitively or just for fun, sign up before the deadline!  You can register here in just a few short minutes.  Good luck and we hope you win that champion t-shirt!

Learning from an Intramural Expert

I got all the updates from last year’s Intramural Basketball Tourney and learned what it’s like to be an IM referee and player from an IM Street Hockey enthusiast.  With a new year and a new IM season coming up, I got to chat with Nora Jabbour – someone I would consider a professional IM player.  With 14 IM championship t-shirts, there’s not much she hasn’t accomplished.  Here are the facts, and read below for details on this semester’s IM season.

1. What is your year and major?

I am starting my first year in Kenan-Flagler Business School’s MBA program.  I’ve always been a proud Tar Heel though – I went here for undergrad, as well.  Older, but definitely wiser!

2. What intramural sports are you involved in?

Right now, I am gearing up for flag football and 3-on-3 basketball.  Grad school keeps me busy, so I will play anything in which my classmates have interest, and that works with our hectic class schedule!  You may see me playing soccer and volleyball this fall, and then basketball for sure in the spring.  We call ourselves the “MBAllers”.

3. How long have you played these IM sports?

I am a better team coordinator than I am player!  I have played basketball and flag football since I was young – maybe middle school – but my fondest memories are from my undergrad IM teams.  I am trying to exceed that experience with my MBA classmates.

4. What is your favorite thing about each IM sport?

I don’t have a particular thing about an individual sport, but more so IM sports in general.  They give us a chance to get away from school, have fun and be competitive! It’s a great way to spend an evening laughing with your friends.

5. What has been your greatest accomplishment playing IM sports?

In undergrad, I won 14 IM shirts – I think that is an accomplishment in itself. I also won the IM participant of the year during my second year, which I was very proud of.

______________________________________________________________

To join an IM team, check out the schedule here.  You can find the rules for each sport on the same site.  Everything from soccer to corn hole is coming up.  Even if you have no experience with a certain sport, it’s worth giving a try, but be sure to sign up on time!

“Big 4″ IM Basketball Tournament

On Sunday, March 25, Campus Rec’s Intramurals staff and a few lucky IM basketball teams attended the “Big 4” basketball tournament at Wake Forest University. Brandon Hyde, one of the interns, gave me his perspective on the day full of basketball.

How many UNC teams played in the tournament and how did you decide who to take?

UNC sent two teams to the tournament (one Men’s and one Women’s team). The only requirement was that these teams be comprised of only students (no faculty or staff).  We asked for volunteers to represent UNC and took the first teams who responded.

How many schools were there? How many teams were there overall?

It was a basketball tournament between all of the ACC schools in the state of North Carolina so UNC, Duke, NC State and Wake Forest all participated – giving the tournament its name “The Big 4″. Each school brought one men’s and one women’s team for a total of eight teams at the event. In addition, each school also brought three of its best student sports officials to call the games.

How did our teams perform?

Men’s performance – The Men lost all three of their games. However, two were fought down to wire. We lost our first game to Duke 57-56 (we had a chance to win at the buzzer but the ball rimmed out). We lost to NC State by 9 (77-68). We lost to Wake Forest as they made a layup with 15 seconds left and our last- second shot failed to go through (68-66). The Men enjoyed the tournament and did well for being undermanned (most teams had 12+ players, while ours only had 6). They played valiantly and walked away from the experience with no regrets and knew they had played their hardest.

Women’s performance – Unfortunately, the lady Heels lost all three of their match-ups as well. We lost in convincing fashion to Duke (77-47). Duke’s perimeter offense was the best seen at the tournament, as they at one point converted six consecutive three-point field goals and led the lady Heels by 20 at the end of the first half. The women rebounded in their next two match-ups but fell short against NC State, losing 47-41, and ran out of gas against Wake Forest, losing by three.

What was did you enjoy about the tournament?

All the teams expressed exceptional sportsmanship and everyone really enjoyed themselves. Games were competitive and hard fought. The event was such a success that there are plans to expand The Big Four tournament to include more sports, like flag football and softball during the 2013-2014 school year.

Chatting With An IM Street Hockey Enthusiast

This semester, Campus Rec Intramural Sports offers basketball, indoor soccer, volleyball, and more. In fact, they’re offering a total of nineteen different sports so there’s something for everyone!

One of the most popular spring sports is street hockey. Since registration for the sport opens today, we spoke with a fellow Tar Heel who we knew would be excited. Eli McCrain both plays and referees IM Street Hockey. Read about his experience with Intramural Sports and then find out how you can be a part!

Eli, what year are you and what is your major?

I am a sophomore majoring in Anthropology and minoring in Philosophy.

Have long have you played and refereed IM Street Hockey?

I’ve done both for two years. My brother, Josh, was a very successful Campus Rec employee and he encouraged me to apply for the job!

And are you involved in any other IM Sports?

I also officiate basketball and softball, but street hockey is the only sport I play.

What is your favorite thing about playing IM Street Hockey?

I love how great of a workout I get by playing Street Hockey. It’s tough running around the court- I get so tired!

So, what has been your IM Street Hockey team’s greatest accomplishment?

Last year, my team earned the championship t-shirt for Co-Rec. It was a huge step for us and it was very exciting!

Registration for IM Street Hockey opens today, February 27th, and closes March 13th. The game is played between two teams of six players, including a goalie, so be sure to sign up enough players for a full team and for substitutes! You can play either Single Sex or Co-Rec.

If you’re new to Street Hockey, don’t worry – Campus Rec has all the rules of the game on their website.  And if you’re up for playing multiple IM sports, be sure to check out the schedule for the rest of the semester. Ultimate Disc, Texas Hold’em and Co-Rec Kickball are just a few of the sports still to come! Find out more about IM Street Hockey and other IM sports at campusrec.unc.edu/intramural-sports.
