Campus Rec 101

If you’re a regular reader, you are familiar with News Roundups – blog posts that have the latest and greatest health news.  With so many new students, I decided to have a roundup of last year’s blog posts.  Here are three links that will help you start a healthy school year with Campus Rec.

4 Tips to Survive Your First Campus Workout: It can be intimidating to go to a new gym. If you are a first-year student, a transfer student or just someone who wants to make exercise a part of their life this year, we want to make your first few times at the gym a success. Check out these four tips so that you look like a usual gym junkie.  An added tip – sign up for a personal training session.  They can walk you through and show you what equipment to use for the most effective workout.

Fitness Assessment: Did you know that you can get a free fitness assessment from a personal trainer at the SRC?  They will find everything from your height and weight to your bicep strength.  Read up on all the tests that will be performed and how to sign up.  With your results, you can chat with the personal trainer and get advice on how to reach your fitness goals.  In a few weeks, feel free to take another assessment and see your improvement!

Campus Run: Thanks to Campus Rec, Fleet Feet Carrboro and Nike, you can enjoy some running company.  Every Tuesday at 6 p.m., runners of all paces come together to complete a three to five mile loop.  You don’t have to sign up or pay anything!  And best of all, after you finish your run, Nike will give away t-shirts and other items.  How often do you get rewarded right after working out?  Grab some friends, go on a run and get free gear!

Also, check out the group fitness class reviews on Tar Heel Tone Up.  This will give you an idea of what to expect for many of the offered classes.  By the way, more reviews are coming this year!  Last, grab a copy of the Tar Heel Tone Up magazine.  This will give you the latest Campus Rec news, dorm room recipes, information on intramural sports and more!
