The Benefits of Kickboxing

If you like Zumba, Step or any group fitness class involving choreography, you will love kickboxing.  Actually, Campus Rec offers both Kickboxing and Turbo Kick.  Kickboxing is a high intensity cardio class that focuses on punches and kicks whereas Turbo Kick is a combination of kickboxing and dance moves that are choreographed to music.  Besides being a fun way to exercise, here are a few more reasons to give both kickboxing classes a try!

Cardio and Muscle Endurance: While these classes are great cardio workouts, it’s not just your heart that is getting all the benefits.  Kickboxing involves moves that will challenge and strengthen your arms, legs and core. An added bonus – extra muscle will rev your metabolism!

Balance: Although kickboxing moves are not easy to do, they are easy to learn.  In the first five minutes of a class, you’ll realize how much side to side movement there is and how much you must use your core.  By doing the moves regularly, your abs will become stronger and your balance will improve greatly.

Stress Relief: Like any exercise, kickboxing releases endorphins.  So although you may be leaving the class covered in sweat, you’ll have a big smile on your face.  The kicks and punches you throw will help reduce any anxiety you may have, so you’ll be ready to tackle the test you’ve been worried about for weeks.

Versatility: Unless you’re trying out for another Karate Kid movie, chances are you don’t walk around doing kickboxing moves.  The punches and kicks challenge your body in a different way from your usual gym routine, so you are going to build different muscles.  And since these classes are unlike any other, the routines are fresh and fun, so you’ll enjoy every minute of it!

Both Kickboxing and Turbo Kick are high energy classes with pumped up music so they’re great classes to go to with a few friends.  Until school begins, check out (most of) August’s schedule here so you can schedule in a few classes.  Starting Aug. 27, click here for the group fitness class schedule for RHRC and here for the SRC.

I just love yoga, zumba and kickboxing! I’m currently following some kickboxing bootcamp classes and I’m really feeling much better due to them! I have noticed that I also lost some pounds since I started these classes….Kickboxing seems to have a lot of advantages!
