Wilderness Perspectives Backpacking

This May, Campus Rec will offer the Wilderness Perspectives Backpacking Trip to all rising sophomores, juniors and seniors.  From May 6th-11th, Student Expedition Instructors will lead the group through the Wilson Creek area in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Participants will travel six to eight miles per day while exploring the old-growth forest, abundant waterfalls and steep terrain.

This intensive wilderness experience will offer an unparalleled opportunity for self-reflection by escaping the responsibilities and distractions of civilization.

“Campus Recreation has introduced this trip to provide students with a transformational experience during their college careers that may allow them to recognize their potential through increased self-awareness and compassion for others, said Dave Yeargan, Expedition Program Manager.

The group will function as a self-reliant community as it explores the wilderness of the Southern Appalachians. Instructors will teach students the skills to succeed and allow participants to lead their own experiences. Students will be allowed to make their own decisions and will learn from the consequences of those choices. Nightly debriefs, solo time and evening conversations will encourage students to reflect on who they are, what they’re doing and where they’re going in life.

“Students should expect to gain increased self-confidence, self-knowledge, tolerance for adversity and appreciation for others,” said Yeargan.

There are nine slots available for this trip, six of which are still open! No experience is required and all food, equipment and transportation will be provided as part of the $325 fee. For information on how to register, visit http://campusrec.unc.edu/expeditions.

Campus Recreation, Fleet Feet Carrboro & Nike Present: Campus Run

If you’re a runner, you’re probably rejoicing at the return of warmer weather. You no longer have to decide between braving the biting winter air and running endless laps on treadmills while flipping through the same magazines you’ve been reading all winter. Finally, you can run outdoors comfortably, taking in Chapel Hill’s beautiful views while getting your daily dose of vitamin D.

This spring, Campus Recreation will team up with Nike and Fleet Feet Carrboro to host ‘Campus Run’ every Tuesday at 6pm. Whether you’re looking for a program to help you get back into the swing of your cardio routine or you just enjoy running with company, this could be the perfect program for you! Each run will be between 3 and 5 miles in distance, at varying paces. And, to make it as easy as possible, there is no pre-registration or fee- so you can participate as often as you’d like.

Now, for the best part: After each run, Nike will give away FREE t-shirts and other cool items! A free group workout AND free gear? What’s not to love?

Cycle Cinema Sunday

Do you ever get bored on the bicycle? Your legs just go around and around. You’ve got nothing to think about – except maybe how much time you have until you can be done with your workout. If you’re like me and the bike seems a little too repetitive, you should attend Campus Rec’s last Cycle Cinema Sunday of the spring semester!

On April 15, from 5:00 p.m. until roughly 6:30 p.m., you can watch a movie while you bike. Center Stage, a movie about twelve ballet dancers, will be playing as you pedal along for over an hour. You can take breaks, slow down or grab some water when you need to. You won’t even be thinking about how hard your legs are working and how fast you heart is pumping by the end of the film.

You can sign up at the SRC front desk. Space is limited so be sure reserve your bike soon!

Global Gladiator Games

It’s the Carolina version of the Hunger Games. Be sure to join Campus Rec, MASALA (UNC’s multicultural organization), the Interfraternity Council and Alpha Phi Alpha in competing in the 2012 Global Gladiator Games!

Grab some friends and compete in the five action-packed GGG events, which will take place at Hooker Fields 1 and 2. The five challenges:

  1. Jousting  (without the horses, full metal costumes and the spears of course)
  2. Sniper
  3. Wheel Barrow Relay (be sure to work out those arm muscles beforehand!)
  4. Obstacle Course Relay
  5. Tug-of-War (bringing it back to elementary school)

Think you’d be a pro at these events? Get a team together and register so that you can be the ultimate gladiators. Or, if you’re feeling competitive but don’t have a team, you can register as an individual and Campus Rec will place you on a team. Carolina students, faculty or staff members can compete in one of three divisions: men’s, women’s and co-rec.

The competition will take place Wednesday, April 11 at 5:30 p.m. Check-in takes place the day of the event from 5:00-5:25 and you can register from March 19th through April 10th. Register as a team at the Campus Rec Main Office in the SRC or register as an individual online.

“Big 4″ IM Basketball Tournament

On Sunday, March 25, Campus Rec’s Intramurals staff and a few lucky IM basketball teams attended the “Big 4” basketball tournament at Wake Forest University. Brandon Hyde, one of the interns, gave me his perspective on the day full of basketball.

How many UNC teams played in the tournament and how did you decide who to take?

UNC sent two teams to the tournament (one Men’s and one Women’s team). The only requirement was that these teams be comprised of only students (no faculty or staff).  We asked for volunteers to represent UNC and took the first teams who responded.

How many schools were there? How many teams were there overall?

It was a basketball tournament between all of the ACC schools in the state of North Carolina so UNC, Duke, NC State and Wake Forest all participated – giving the tournament its name “The Big 4″. Each school brought one men’s and one women’s team for a total of eight teams at the event. In addition, each school also brought three of its best student sports officials to call the games.

How did our teams perform?

Men’s performance – The Men lost all three of their games. However, two were fought down to wire. We lost our first game to Duke 57-56 (we had a chance to win at the buzzer but the ball rimmed out). We lost to NC State by 9 (77-68). We lost to Wake Forest as they made a layup with 15 seconds left and our last- second shot failed to go through (68-66). The Men enjoyed the tournament and did well for being undermanned (most teams had 12+ players, while ours only had 6). They played valiantly and walked away from the experience with no regrets and knew they had played their hardest.

Women’s performance – Unfortunately, the lady Heels lost all three of their match-ups as well. We lost in convincing fashion to Duke (77-47). Duke’s perimeter offense was the best seen at the tournament, as they at one point converted six consecutive three-point field goals and led the lady Heels by 20 at the end of the first half. The women rebounded in their next two match-ups but fell short against NC State, losing 47-41, and ran out of gas against Wake Forest, losing by three.

What was did you enjoy about the tournament?

All the teams expressed exceptional sportsmanship and everyone really enjoyed themselves. Games were competitive and hard fought. The event was such a success that there are plans to expand The Big Four tournament to include more sports, like flag football and softball during the 2013-2014 school year.
