Expedition to Cox Mountain

This past weekend, I went on the Cox Mountain Off-Trail Challenge expedition with Outdoor Recreation. I never thought I could be just 15 minutes from campus and feel like I was in the middle of the mountains, a hundred miles away. Six other students and I spent our Saturday hiking along the Eno River. We took in the river’s beauty while learning how to use a compass and a map to find our way off the trail.

The trip had many highlights. Aside from getting exercise and exposure to nature, I enjoyed interacting with other Tar Heels the most. Because we had no technology, no distractions and a full day of adventure, we were able to get to know each other really well. I quickly learned that, like me, most of the students decided to hike to take a break from the stressful school environment.

It may be a little embarrassing to admit, but our lunch was another high light of the trip. Before we left Chapel Hill, we packed our food and split it among people’s backpacks. Although the bell peppers, pitas, hummus, cheese and apples were delicious, I fell in love with the typical hiker’s meal for instant energy: GORP, which is a mixture of granola, oats, raisins and peanuts (plus M&Ms – my favorite part!).

I truly valued the learning and leadership aspect of this hike. Although three instructors joined our trip, it was fully student-led. We got to pick which direction to go, when to break, and how long to hike. Everyone stepped up to the challenges this presented and learned a lot from it. After the trip, we debriefed together on what we learned, what challenged us, what was rewarding about the hike, etc. I never expected to learn so much about myself from hiking for just a few hours.

There are only a few more trips this semester, but next semester, a whole new calendar of expeditions will be posted. The expeditions range from day trips to weekend trips and you can choose from hiking, climbing or kayaking. Whether you want to spend a day with friends or step out of your comfort zone to meet new people, I would encourage you to take a day off from the stresses of school and enjoy nature.

Yoga

It’s that stressful time of the year again: exams and papers galore. This is exactly why a yoga class seemed like a necessity to survive the week. Whether it actually fit into my busy schedule or not is up for debate, but I was going to make it happen either way.

I have never taken a yoga class before. My friends and I have always said we should take one together, but I’ve never actually taken the time for myself to stretch, relax and meditate. I decided to take a Thursday yoga class at Rams Head, hoping the peaceful hour would lead into a peaceful weekend. And it did just that.

Although the class was far different from my usual gym routine, I really enjoyed it. And I wish it would’ve lasted another hour or two. While I usually like intense workouts, it was nice to let my muscles relax.

But that doesn’t mean was easy! There were some crazy poses that I did not come even close to conquering. Finding a spot in the back of the room was a good decision because there was a handful of yoga experts in the class (although I’m sure no one would have judged me for my awkward posed downward dog or funny looking warrior pose).  Even with my imperfect form, I still was able to stretch, breathe, and relax, which was the most important aspect of the class.

I left the class feeling stress free with an “If I’m-able-to-relax-for-60-minutes-I-can-accomplish-anything” attitude. With finals coming up in less than a month, I definitely plan to schedule in a few more yoga classes. If you’ve never tried a yoga class, give it a shot. Even if you think it may not be for you (I can relate – I’m a cardio and strength training queen!), try one class. We often don’t take enough (or any) time for ourselves to meditate and breathe. After just one yoga class, you’ll be feeling refreshed and be able to push through the rest of the semester!

31st Annual Turkey Trot

It’s that time of year again. With Thanksgiving right around the corner, Campus Rec will hold the 31st annual Turkey Trot this Saturday, Nov. 12 at 10 a.m. Because it’s the season of giving, Campus Rec is asking participants to bring at least one canned good rather than paying an entrance fee. After the event, the collected items will be donated to the Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina. If you need some ideas about what to bring, take a look at this list of their most needed items.

In past years, the Turkey Trot has been a traditional 5k, but this year Campus Rec has added a twist. The race will follow a 5k course (3.1 miles) where the “Pilgrims” (race participants) will be chasing the “Turkeys” (Campus Rec staff).  Turkeys will be given a 3 minute headstart. Each Turkey you pass on the trail will earn you a raffle entry.

Want to take it a little easier? You can partake in a 1-mile walk or run option.

After the race, apple cider and snacks will be offered in addition to games and crafts for children.

You can register online at Campus Rec’s website or register in person in the Campus Rec Main Office located in the SRC. Check-in opens at 9 a.m. and walk-up registrations are accepted the day of the event from 9:00-9:45 a.m.

I hope you’ll take advantage of this fun, family-friendly event. Join Campus Rec this Saturday to support a good cause, to get in some exercise and to possibly win some great prizes!

Ziplining!

This past weekend, I was lucky enough to go to Carolina’s Outdoor Education Center and give the zip line a shot. And this wasn’t just any zipline- at over 1200 feet, it’s one of the longest ziplines on the East Coast.

I’m not afraid of heights, so looking at the tower I would be launched off of didn’t bother me. It was actually the rope net I had to climb to get to that platform that scared me the most. Taking it step by step, I eventually made it to the top and waited my turn to soar down to the landing spot.

The rush of adrenaline I got from zipping through the woods was unlike any other. It was so thrilling, after my feet hit the ground, I rushed in line again. If you ever get the opportunity, I definitely recommend giving the zipline a try.

The OEC is open to all levels of physical abilities. It has multiple challenge courses that many UNC organizations utilize to build a sense of community and learn more about each other.  With 12 high ropes courses, including the zip line, and over 10 low ropes course, this 20-acre wooded area has something to offer your group.

In addition, the OEC has 11 tennis courts, 3 volleyball courts and an 18-hole disc golf course.

For more information on the OEC, visit www.campusrec.unc.edu/outdoor-recreation and for more information on the challenge courses, visit www.campusrec.unc.edu/challenge-course.
